
The annual comic and pop culture convention in DC, dubbed Awesome Con, is going virtual this year. The event features plenty of comic books and collectibles, toys, games, art, events, cosplay and more. Last year, Awesome Con brought out over 70,000 people. This year, Awesome Con was postponed until December. However, they have plenty to tide us over until then with a weekend of free virtual fun. Here is what to expect this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- Friday May 1st –
- The Awesome Con Short Film Festival (2019 Replay) will be livestreamed to Facebook by Astray Productions. (10 a.m.-4:45 p.m.)
- There will be a movie watch along to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from 5-7 p.m. A live chat will be happening in the thread in the Facebook event.
- Later that same evening, try out some virtual Cosplay Karaoke by District Karaoke from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Sign ups are open with one karaoke room livestreamed to Facebook.
- The Awesome Con Short Film Festival (2019 Replay) will be livestreamed to Facebook by Astray Productions. (10 a.m.-4:45 p.m.)
- Saturday May 2nd
- If you’re not too tired from Friday’s fun, Saturday begins at 10 a.m. with Panels & Programming from Awesome Con Panelists and special guests. Some panels include a Live Q&A with Shazam’s! Zachary Levi and Avengers: Infinity War & Avengers: Endgame’s Ross Marquand, an inside look at working for NASA and the journey of making a comic book.
- Later that evening, District Trivia is hosting a trivia night from 6-7:30 p.m. in Awesome Con’s Facebook event.
- Saturday night ends with another movie watch along to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie from 8-10 p.m. with a live chat happening in the Facebook event thread.

- On Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and then 2:45-4 p.m., there will be a Facebook livestream of artists, makers, crafters, vendors and more who were supposed to be at Awesome Con in person and are streaming live.
- From 2-2:45 p.m., get your best costume ready with a Virtual Costume Contest hosted by WWE costumer designer Mikal Mosley. There will be three different categories—kids, individual and group. The winners of each group will win a badge to Awesome Con in December.
- Kids can tune in for a movie watch along of Disney’s Tangled from 4-6 p.m.
- On Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and then 2:45-4 p.m., there will be a Facebook livestream of artists, makers, crafters, vendors and more who were supposed to be at Awesome Con in person and are streaming live.
- Additional Programming
- Live celebrity Q&A broadcasts to Zoom & Facebook – Awesome Con Online will host free, live Zoom calls with Zachary Levi and Ross Marquand. If you’re interested in asking a question, a Zoom account will be needed. Your video will be shared with Zachary and Ross to ask your question! The two are also selling autographs with proceeds benefitting The Red Cross.
- Personalized merchandise will also be sold with donations to The Red Cross.
- There will be Awesome Con Jr. too—for families with children, expect to see free, educational and interactive online resources to help kids stay entertained during stay-at-home orders. New content will be updated each week.
