Heading to DC for the Cherry Blossom Festival? If you act fast–booking 14 days before travel–you can save 25% on Amtrak tickets from many major cities. Avoid the hassle of driving and parking; just sit back on the train and enjoy the food, beverages and view. Washington’s Union Station is the official headquarters of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
The famous cherry trees, which were given to the U.S. by Japan in 1912, line the Tidal Basin and burst into bloom about this time every year, signalling the beginning of spring. This year a cold snap is delaying the peak bloom, which the National Park Service predicts will begin about March 19-22, but the different varieties of trees will continue to bloom into mid-April.
The NPS Welcome Tent area of the National Cherry Blossom Festival will be open March 15 through April 2.
